Last Sunday in Viterbo

Finally, some excellent weather! Sleep in a bit on Sunday morning was the plan. After a leisurely breakfast we took the bikes out for a ride, though our legs were certainly tired from yesterday's climbing up to Lago di Vico. A steep section just above San Martino al Cimino is near 20% so an easier spin was in order this morning. Got back just-in-time to grab some stuff for dinner later and enjoy a relaxing bath before MotoGP came on the tube. While watching Valentino Rossi and Co. duke it out at LeMans we enjoyed melanzane parmigiano and prosciutto and melone. After caffe it was time to tune in the Giro d'Italia's big stage, the one ending atop Monte Zoncolan.
We've yet to climb this one as it's quite a ways out there from our now-standard Legendary Climbs route but perhaps someday we'll have to face it -- but with many of the pros fitting our "standard" gearing with a low of either 34-29 or 30-26 one wonders if this climb, steeper (but mercifully a bit shorter) than the Mortirolo, which we visit every year, would be any fun at all? The Giro field saw a reshuffling of the General Classification which is exciting though they have a so-called "rest day" today (Monday) before a brutal climbing time-trial stage from San Vigilio to Plan de Corones. THIS one we know well as we take this route on our Legendary Climbs of the Giro d'Italia tour on our way from Antermoia to Cortina. Strangely though, nobody is ever interested in taking the left turn onto the stada sterrata section at the top of Passo Furcia! I don't blame them as WE still have Colle San Angelo, Tre Croci and the fearsome Tre Cime climbs on our way to Cortina. It'll be great to see on TV tomorrow in any case. Later this week we transfer up to Monferrato to get ready for our new Vineyards to the Sea tour.
