Today would have been a perfect Sunday in any season, but in February it was especially appreciated! Sleep in a bit, then prepare cappuccino and a hearty breakfast of "sicilian toast" (bread dipped in egg, milk and orange zest, then fried and enjoyed with fresh strawberries and whipped cream before a 70 + km ride with views like this. Complete with WWII relics!
A very nice climb got us up here, wide switchbacks, a max grade of around 7% and only (no kidding!) ONE car passing us.
Arrive back at our seaside apartment and uncork a bottle of Nero d'Avola, one which received the "best wine from Sicily" award from VinItaly 2010 and just missed the three-glass award from Italian Wines. Enjoy it with an antipasto of melanzane parmigiano, followed by a primo piatto of faggotini filled with potato and zucchini, dressed with fresh sage and butter. Finish with a secondo piatto of coniglio al peperoni, cooked aiti and a desert of torta pistachio, washed down with moscato di sicilia. A dream? No, just our Sunday in paradise...hope you had a great weekend too!
