Almost three-glasses!

In our continuing project to sample as many of the top-rated Sicilian wines as possible while we're here, we enjoyed Firriato's Camelot 2008 this past sunday. These comments have appeared in a few places and they sum things up well - "A beautifully deep ruby red colour, which reveals an astonishing aromatic spectrum, complex with primary notes of mature red fruits and spices. The palate is very powerful and concentrated, with soft and gentle tannins that caress the palate and then seduceit with neverending sweetness of fruit. It is a veritable fairytale in the glass." Italian Wines thought this deserved a taste during their 3-glass competition and we agree. It just missed and if we had to explain why it would be a lack of expression of the territory.Make no mistake, we think this is a great wine but unless you knew it was from Sicily we doubt you could tell only by tasting. If you have friends who think wonderful wines in the international style can not be made in Sicily, throw down a wager and bring this Cabernet-Merlot blend to them for a blind-tasting! The cool wooden box was a find in a scrap heap near our favorite panificio here in Ortigia - some folks collect these and even make tables out of them!
