Final night in southern Italy

The night sky over our "undisclosed location" on our final night before returning to our northern Italian HQ. Tonight we enjoyed typical cooking at a noted SlowFood eatery. Antipasti were (we selected the tasting menu) zucchini in a sort of carpione (vinegar) sauce with fennel, a frittata with truffles, a heavenly caponata, a mushroom zuppa served in a tiny bread bowl and polenta topped with Lucanian sausage and tomato sauce. First plates were cavatelli with local olive oil and tomato, then a "Sarconi" bean puree topped with fresh pasta shaped like leaves. The bean dish has us planning to search for some dried ones tomorrow before we leave. Second plate was sort of a Lucanian version of saltimbocca or cordon bleu---a pork slice covered with scamorza cheese and pancetta. Wonderful dishes all, especially with a 2003 Aglianico del Vulture! We finished with a yogurt mousse with strawberries for dessert. Sadly, the itinerary we're working on will not be on our 2010 schedule but we're determined to come up with a great tour of this (that for now will have to remain a secret) region.
